Celebrate Pro Bono Week

The annual National Pro Bono Celebration is scheduled for October 25 through 31, 2009. Sponsored by the ABA Standing Committee on Pro Bono and Public Service, the celebration is a coordinated national effort to showcase the great difference that pro bono lawyers make to the nation, its system of justice, its communities and, most of all, to the clients they serve. The week is also dedicated to the quest for more pro bono volunteers to meet the ever-growing legal needs of this country's most vulnerable citizens.

The ABA Standing Committee on Pro Bono and Public Service chose to launch this important initiative now because of the increasing need for pro bono services during these harsh economic times and the unprecedented response of attorneys to meet this demand.

Although national in breadth, this celebration provides an opportunity for local legal associations across the country to collaboratively commemorate the contributions of America's lawyers and, most important, to recruit additional volunteers to meet the growing need.

One of the guiding principles of the Pro Bono Committee's planning is to support existing local pro bono awards, events, and programs . The legal needs of the poor are local issues, and although nationwide, this celebration is intended to have a local focus and impact. Goals for the celebration include:

  1. Recognizing the pro bono efforts of America's lawyers
  2. Recruiting more pro bono volunteers
  3. Mobilizing community support for pro bono.

If we lived in a perfect world and everyone did as expected, there would be no need for organizations like this one...nor would we have a need for attorneys. That would also relieve us from wondering what Pro Bono Week is all about. However, the truth of the matter is, "There is "NO" perfect on this earth". Since it is a fact there is "NO" perfect on this earth, it is necessary to try to fix all that goes wrong in our lives. The problem that comes from this, is very plain and even more simple...when people become powerful, they think they are always right, no matter what...and even when they admit what they do might not be right, they are fast to tell you, it is the law, or I don't know how to fix it. Thus making it necessary for us to need an attorney.

The CBA and the CBF are co-sponsoring the 5th Annual Pro Bono Week from October 25-31, 2009. This year's theme, inspired by Abraham Lincoln's Bicentennial is: “With malice toward none, with charity to all.” The CBA Young Lawyers Section Pro Bono and Community Service Fair will once again be a centerpiece of Pro Bono Week, and will take place on the evening of Thursday, October 29th. Kirkland & Ellis LLP is generously hosting the Fair this year.

Nationwide In 2005, the CBA and the CBF launched our annual Pro Bono Week with the twin goals of honoring lawyers' pro bono efforts and educating the public and the legal community about how these lawyers are improving the lives of the less fortunate. In 2009, communities across the country will join Chicago in celebrating Pro Bono Week. The American Bar Association will sponsor a national Pro Bono Celebration , inspired in part by the success of Chicago's annual Pro Bono Week.

So many times while we are talking to hurting parents over the loss of their child(ren), they make statements like, "I just don't think I can go on without my child(ren)". Our founder always comes back with, " You can't help your child, if you hurt yourself ". Most of the time the biggest problem these hurting parents and children have, is they CAN NOT afford the cost of an attorney to fight their case.
