Troup County Juvenile Court Judge Michael Key Nominated as Secretary of the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges

July 24, 2006 – ATLANTA, GA – Troup County Judge Michael Key was nominated to serve as Secretary on the Executive Committee of the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges (NCJFCJ). On July 19, Judge Key’s nomination was confirmed at the organization’s 69th annual conference held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The NCJFCJ’s membership is made up of more than 1,700 judges, referees, commissioners, masters and other juvenile and family law professionals.

The NCJFCJ was founded as a non-profit organization in 1937. Its mission is to improve courts and systems practice and raise awareness of the core issues that touch the lives of many of our nation's children and families. The NCJFCJ is headquartered on the University of Nevada campus in Reno and provides cutting-edge training, wide-ranging technical assistance and research to help the nation's courts, judges and staff in their important work.

As Secretary, Judge Key will serve as custodian of the organization’s records and archives and head the Membership Committee, along with other duties as assigned by the President. Judge Key’s one-year term as Secretary began when he was sworn in on July 19.

Judge R. Michael Key is a partner in the law firm of Key, Bridges & Gordy, P.C. and has been in private practice in Troup County, GA since 1979. He has served as part-time Juvenile Court Judge in Troup County, after having practiced in the Juvenile Court for ten years prior to his appointment. Judge Key is a Past-President of the Georgia Council of Juvenile Court Judges. He also serves on the Permanency Planning Advisory Committee, the Delinquency Committee and the Education/Training Committee. Judge Key is Co-Chair of the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges/National CASA Association Judicial Liaison Committee. He also serves on the Georgia Child Support Guidelines Commission and Georgia Commission on Family Violence. He is a lead judge in the Georgia Court Improvement Initiative and in the National Council's Graduated Sanctions Project. Judge Key has twice received the Georgia Council of Juvenile Court Judges President's Award and was presented the Child Advocate of the Year - Judges Division in May 2005 by the Juvenile Law Section of the Young Lawyer Division of the Georgia State Bar Association.
